CLEVELAND --?Indians?catcher Yan Gomes might play in October after all.Gomes, who broke his right hand during a minor league injury rehabilitation appearance late in the season, has progressed to the point that Cleveland might include him on its postseason roster when the Indians open the AL Division Series on Thursday against Boston.Hes remarkable, Indians manager Terry Francona said Tuesday before a workout at Progressive Field. It has been a challenging season for Gomes, who separated his right shoulder on July 17 and spent two months on the disabled list. During his final game with Double-A Akron before his expected return, he was struck by a pitch, and it appeared his season was over. However, Gomes worked himself back into the lineup last week. He homered Sunday in Kansas City, connecting on the first pitch he had seen in a major league game in 77 days.Francona did not reveal his roster Tuesday, but Gomes wore shin pads during infield drills and took batting practice. Francona praised Indians trainers Lonnie Soloff and Jim Mehalik for helping Gomes during his recovery.I dont think Yan thought there was a chance this was possible, Francona said. I know Lonnie kind of put it in his head. I think it took Yan maybe a night to kind of grasp that there was a chance. And then once he did, he was all-in, like you can see. When Gomes homered, the Indians dugout erupted in celebration. As he watched on television, Indians president Chris Antonetti was moved as well.It gave me chills, Antonetti said. To know how hard hes worked and all hes been through throughout the course of the season, for him to hit a home run -- not only for himself but the impact it had on the team -- you just couldnt write a better script. I was just so happy for him more than anything. The Indians, who overcame injuries while winning their first AL Central title since 2007, also have been encouraged by the improvement theyve seen in injured starter Danny Salazar, who has been sidelined with a strained forearm. The right-hander wont pitch against Boston, but Salazar might be back on the mound if the Indians advance. He has been increasing his velocity and pitch count in recent bullpen sessions, with the hope that he might be able to pitch in relief during the offseason. In the meantime, the team is sending him to their training facility in Goodyear, Arizona, where he can get more attention and treatment.Hell continue on a throwing program, try to build up his arm strength, feel completely healthy, and well see where it goes from there, Antonetti said. The first goal is just to make sure hes full healthy and at full strength. From there, well determine what the best role might be. But I would imagine it would be in shorter stints. Its not going to be in a starting spot.Danny obviously wants to pitch. They work throughout the course of the year and in spring training just to get to this point and have the opportunity to pitch or play in the postseason. Dannys just not to that point. I think if he could pitch, he would. The 26-year-old went 11-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 25 starts before he left a Sept. 9 outing after four innings. Marcus Davenport Jersey . If you put Cincinnati Reds star Adam Duvall in charge of baseball, he is going to eliminate the designated hitter.Who was your favorite player growing up? Duvall:?Derek Jeter. I enjoyed watching him play. He never had any off-the-field issues or even on-the-field issues. He was a true pro, and I really wanted to grow up to be like him.Who is your favorite player to watch today (not a teammate)? Duvall: Thats a tough one. I like to watch Hunter Pence play just because of the way he plays, how hard he plays. I was his teammate for a little bit, and I really enjoyed learning from him and just learning that every day youve got to go out there and give it 100 percent. Thats the way he plays, and I like that.Who is your most underrated teammate? Duvall: My most underrated teammate? Id probably say Tyler Holt, because he does a lot for the club even though he doesnt play every day. He keeps the clubhouse light, mixes and mingles with everybody. I think he helps out a lot.Whats the most annoying question you are asked by the media?Duvall:?I got asked a lot of questions about being traded for Mike Leake and hitting my first home run off him. It wasnt a bad question. I just got asked so many times the same one.One rule you would change? Duvall:?I dont know. I mean, I enjoy watching National League games because of the pitchers having to hit. Maybe that would be it. It makes it so much more interesting, having to juggle the pieces rather thaan just being able to leave it alone.ddddddddddddThe double switch is very interesting because you have to know what youre doing and it can change a ballgame. So, maybe get rid of the DH would be it.Who is ultimately responsible for policing the game? Players, manager, umpires, league? Duvall:?I think its everybody, from the ground up. The leagues not in here looking at what were doing, so if we want to clean the game up, its got to be everybody. How big of a problem are PEDs in todays game? Duvall:?Well, I think its a much cleaner game than it was. I really think theyre doing a good job, but with that being said -- and they know this -- I think its going to be a continuous battle because with new drugs, theyre always going to be a step behind. But theyve got to stay as close behind as they can, and they know that, and theyre doing a good job with it.What is something that people dont know about you or have wrong about you? Duvall:?Well, a lot of people dont know Im a Type I diabetic, so I think thats the biggest thing. When anybody ever asks me, thats what I tell them. Even though Im doing some stuff with the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, it still hasnt gotten out to everybody that Im diabetic. I have an insulin pump, and I have a continuous glucose monitor, and I just keep it in my back pocket. ' ' '
