If the finish of Bill Goldbergs 86-second dismantling of Brock Lesnar at Sundays WWE Survivor Series main event left you in shock, well, that of course was by design.Guess what? Im not even calling you from the hospital, Goldberg told ESPN.com on Tuesday as he let out a hearty laugh, moments after his plane home from Toronto touched down. After two months promoting the violent reality of his scripted return to pro wrestling at 49, following a 12-year retirement, it was clear he still enjoyed the show business side of swerving the audience.I think at this time in my career, the best way to take [Lesnar] down was shock and awe, to do something that nobody would expect against a monster like that, Goldberg said. At the end of the day, you have smart marks all over the world thinking that they know the outcome of a match. I dont believe any of them thought that was going to be it.But as WWE fans continue to digest the shock value from Survivor Series, two things are certain: Goldberg will, in fact, compete in the Royal Rumble on Jan. 29 in San Antonio, which he announced on Mondays episode of Raw, and something changed between the moment his one-off return was announced in October and the moment the booking for Sundays match was finalized.Theres only so much Goldberg can say publicly about his contract status with WWE without giving away where his characters storyline is headed over the next few months or whether his stay will extend to WrestleMania 33 in April.Im only as good as my next appearance and my next match, he said. Im concentrating on the Royal Rumble and thats it. I dont have any plans of doing anything afterwards. My focus is on the 29 other men that Im going to have to crucify to win that damn match. At some point, the build-up to the return of Goldberg, in his first match since a 2004 victory over Lesnar at WrestleMania XX that was serenaded in boos, exceeded expectations for both WWE and the wrestler himself in terms of the fans nostalgic response. And somewhere within that process -- Goldberg wont say when -- the decision was made to extend his comeback beyond Sunday. Its completely dependent if you are a smart businessman upon the return on your product, Goldberg said. I believe that you have to wait and see if that investment is going to pay off and I think each and every time I was given the opportunity, I hoped that I was able to carry the ball and give [WWE] the confidence to have me back and further include me in their plans. Its impossible to ignore the level of buzz that his return has created for WWE and the attention has been just as overwhelming for Goldberg himself. In fact, his cell phone vibrated routinely throughout Tuesdays phone interview with a flood of text messages from well-wishers, which he says began before he even exited the ring on Sunday. From celebrity friends such as ex-NFL cohorts Jim Kelly and Gilbert Brown, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke and actor Daniel Baldwin, to the faithful support of his extended family, who packed the first few rows at Air Canada Centre, Goldberg is nothing if not humbled by the love he has received. But the experience of having his 10-year-old son Gage, who provided the inspiration for Goldbergs return, jump the ringside barrier after the match and join him inside the ring for a shirtless embrace was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that Goldberg said he couldnt be more thankful for.Firstly, I really dont know why he pulled his shirt off in the stands anyway, Goldberg said. At the end of the day, it was hilarious. I couldnt have asked for a better way to write the story. I mean, I really couldnt have. You hope and you wish and you dream for the right things to happen and everything to fall into place. But I never could have imagined for it to work out like this. For as shocking as the finish was for many, it was an ending that was more realistic to a real fight than many WWE matches. That element wasnt lost on Goldberg, who like the UFC veteran Lesnar, is known for his stiff fighting style, which includes elements of mixed martial arts that both performers have regularly trained or competed in.To be able to be booked [to win] against a guy like Brock Lesnar is a dream come true, Goldberg said. Youre looking in a lot of ways at a mirror image of yourself. I think we bring something to the table that is completely different than any other two people in the sport of professional wrestling. And I am proud of that, and I think that weve got that market pretty much cornered. I dont know if that was the case prior to me coming in and being his opponent, but I do believe that thats a special space and I think we can pretty much call our own right now.A self-proclaimed perfectionist regarding his own in-ring work, Goldberg says he was fairly happy with his performance Sunday, which included two spears and a Jackhammer on Lesnar. When asked, however, whether he connected on his spears to the level of his impossible-to-please standards, Goldberg said he came up short as far as truly laying it in.No, I never will. If I would have laid it in to my standards, I would have put him completely through the second ropes, he said. When I had bigger traps it was a lot easier to unload with that spear, I can tell you that. Now until my next appearance, Im going to be doing shrugs and upright rows every 15 minutes. The reality is, Im not 24 or 34 anymore. Things are going to be different when I prepare for and when I compete in an athletic endeavor.Goldberg says he can deal with the limitations of his body while trying to resurrect a character so dependent upon physicality and intimidation. Despite the brief nature of Sundays match, for example, he admits the plane ride home still involved multiple ice bags in strategic locations. But for now until he appears again ahead of the Royal Rumble, Goldberg considers himself on the clock, with every decision he makes in his daily life predicated toward looking and performing better the next time he steps foot in a WWE ring.My fans can expect the same thing that they hopefully fell in love with years ago, Goldberg said. Im still the same guy mentally and emotionally. But things have changed and I dont present myself physically maybe the same way. But it doesnt mean that inside of this mind theres still not that monster thats ready to come out. Shaquille ONeal Jersey . Brian Downing was with the Chicago White Sox at a time when I listened to every game I possibly could on the radio. That particular season the late great Harry Caray was calling the White Sox games. With one ill-chosen word, Hope Solo turned a matter of soccer tactics into moral condemnation. With the help of U.S. Soccers opportunistic overreaction, a molehill became a mountain.Megan Rapinoe prefers to use the molehill that sports actually are to try to scale mountains.Competitive. Fierce. Humble. Badass. Those were the words Rapinoe chose while expressing disappointment with Solo in the aftermath of the veteran goalkeepers criticism of the Swedish team that eliminated Solo, Rapinoe and the rest of the U.S. womens national team from the Olympics. Rapinoes words were examples of what American players should be.Notably absent under the circumstances were other words that at one time might have been applied to the most popular team in womens sports: uncontroversial, inoffensive, bland. At the risk of putting words in the mouth of a player who is adept at speaking them herself, or even communicating silently through the act of kneeling during the national anthem, Rapinoe sounded disappointed not with the controversy surrounding Solo but the pointlessness of it.So after Rapinoe knelt Sunday during the anthem prior to a National Womens Soccer League game, she told espnWs Julie Foudy that the gesture of solidarity with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was born out of being disgusted with the way he has been treated and her desire for a more substantive conversation about race relations. It is debatable whether her gesture, as a one-time offering or if repeated, can accomplish that goal. We are in the midst of a national conversation, or shouting match, about the national anthem. Rapinoe undoubtedly extended the topic for at least another news cycle. That isnt necessarily the same thing as a conversation about the substance of any complaints. But if we truly hold to the idea that there is social value in younger generations, especially girls, watching Rapinoe pursue an athletic passion once reserved for men, then the same must be true of listening to her engage in what President Barack Obama days ago described as active citizenry. One cannot be true without the other. If all are to have opportunities, then all must have voices.Rapinoe noted this weeks ago when asked before an Olympic send-off game in Kansas City about the WNBA players who wore shirts in support of both Black Lives Matter and five police officers killed in a Dallas shooting; the players were fined by the WNBA as a result. Not everybody has to be an activist, but we have a pretty incredible platform being an athlete in this country, Rapinoe told Excelle Sports at the time. Sports is very valued and sort of glorified in this country, and if you want to have that voice, I absolutely think you should. And she does. She did long before any music started playing Sunday. As a college player at the University of Portland, soccer was all the larger world knew of her, if it knew of her at all. She was an inventive, sublimely skilled player with a staar-crossed history of injuries.dddddddddddd. At some point the world as she knew it intermingled with what the world knew of her.Soccer and social justice intersected. I think even before I came out [in 2012], Rapinoe said when asked about that evolution during the Olympics, I think you can sort of look at a big part of our fan base, and theres a lot of gay fans that we have. And so for me, I kind of always was aware of that. And then since coming out, I think its been even more, and something that I really embrace is that I can talk about it, talk to media about it, and sort of open up the conversation and not have it be such a taboo issue. She referenced an article she read that suggested the number of out gay athletes in the Olympics numbered only in the dozens among the thousands of athletes who competed.I think the more we can have these conversations and break down these walls and barriers and stereotypes, the more other athletes will feel comfortable coming out, hopefully. Her answer came in the context of one facet of her life, sexual orientation, but it is far from the only facet. She is among the national team players (as is Solo) who are pursuing an equal pay complaint against U.S. Soccer. When asked out of the blue one day during last years World Cup about the problems facing Metis youth in Manitoba, Canada, she didnt deflect the question with the standard response of being focused on soccer but instead admitted she knew the issue only a little -- and would like to know more. It is hardly a surprise that she felt moved to act now, too.The irony in all of this is that it seems entirely plausible that Rapinoe offended far more people who might show up to watch her play for the United States in its remaining games this fall than Solo did in calling the Swedish team a bunch of cowards for adopting a defensive game plan.Still, it is controversy with a point.A voice need not be loud to matter. And as with Solo, a loud voice does not always resonate. But controversy is never a reason to stay silent. As with any issue of free speech, plenty of people have turned during the Kaepernick saga to a quote often mistakenly attributed to the French philosopher Voltaire: I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.Some present it as a shield, others as an example of a naive nature. Yet one more debate without a resolution. But the image of Rapinoe kneeling before the start of a professional soccer game casts it in a different light. It was, after all, Evelyn Beatrice Hall who wrote those words, a woman who by the norms of the time in the early 20th century had to write under the pseudonym S.G. Tallentyre. It wasnt a womans place to have a voice on matters of consequence.Since thats no longer true, perhaps controversial conversations can bring about change. ' ' '
