TORONTO -- After going almost three weeks between starts, Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada felt a little out of sorts against Seattle.James Paxton pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time in three starts, Seth Smith doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Mariners beat the Blue Jays 2-1 on Friday night, snapping Torontos winning streak at three.Estrada (5-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. Estrada, who is winless in four starts, had surrendered five hits or fewer in his previous 13 outings.I felt good, just rusty, Estrada said. I threw a lot of first-pitch balls, I was behind in the count a lot. It was tough, it was a grind.Estrada (back) was activated off the 15-day disabled list before the game. He was placed on the DL on July 6, one day after being named an All-Star for the first time.Seattle loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but Estrada struck out Shawn OMalley before Kevin Pillar made a sliding catch on Norichaka Aokis liner to shallow center. He did a nice job, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Estrada. He can work out of those jams with the best of them.Paxton (3-4) gave up one run and three hits. He walked one and struck out nine, one shy of his season-high.Paxton was great tonight, Gibbons said. He was really dominating.Working with pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. between starts gave Paxton the best curveball hes had this season. Before these starts I was creeping down a little bit and getting too sidearm, getting on the side of the ball, Paxton said. It wasnt allowing me to get on top of the curveball. Bringing my arm up a little bit more has allowed me to get on top of that curveball.Toronto is 9-17 in one-run games. The Mariners have won five straight and 14 of 20 against AL East opponents this season.Edwin Diaz worked the eighth and Steve Cishek finished for his 23rd save.Edwin Encarnacion drew a two-out walk in the ninth and Troy Tulowitzki singled but Cishek ended it by striking out All-Star Michael Saunders.Paxton retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced. The only blemish in that span was a one-out solo homer by Saunders in the second.Back in the lineup after missing Wednesdays game at Arizona because of a personal matter, Saunders connected in his first career at-bat against the team that drafted him in 2004 and traded him to Toronto before the 2015 season. After Saunders homered, Paxton set down the next 12 batters before Josh Tholes one out walk in the seventh. Josh Donaldson advanced Thole to third with a two-out double but Paxton escaped by striking out Encarnacion on a 2-2 pitch. That was huge, manager Scott Servais said. He made huge pitches there.ROSTER SHUFFLEToronto also activated LHP Franklin Morales (shoulder) off the 60-day disabled list and optioned LHP Aaron Loup and INF Andy Burns to Triple-A Buffalo. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Brad Kaaya was getting tired of throwing short passes. So he called an audible to go deep, and thats when the Miami Hurricanes responded. And if this was Kaayas Miami farewell, it was stellar.Kaaya became Miamis all-time career passing leader, throwing for 396 yards and a career-high-tying four touchdowns as the Hurricanes beat Duke 40-21 on Saturday. Kaaya now has 9,686 yards in three seasons -- 121 more than Ken Dorsey, who piled up 9,565 from 1999 through 2002.Kaaya completed 22 of 35 passes and broke the mark with a 42-yard pass to Stacy Coley in the third quarter. Miami (8-4, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) started breaking the game open when Kaaya decided to take a shot on a deep ball to tight end David Njoku, that audible turning into a 76-yard touchdown and the first of two long ones for Njoku in the game.I said `Screw it, and told David we were going to go, Kaaya said. It was beautiful.Coley made nine catches for 118 yards and a touchdown for Miami and Mark Walton also caught a TD pass for the Hurricanes, who have won four straight.Just a great victory, a great way to finish, Miami coach Mark Richt said. I like when we finish without a whole lot of drama at the end. We did that tonight.Daniel Jones completed 34 of 50 passes for 316 yards for Duke (4-8, 1-7), which will miss a bowl game for the first time in five seasons. We had some great moments this year, Duke center Austin Davis said. But we also had to overcome a lot of adversity as a team. We lost three captains and a lot of seniors went down. It was tough. Were going to look back at this year as overcoming adversity and learning from it.The teams combined for five scores in the games first five possessions, and Miamis lead was only 16-14 at the half. But Kaaya struck twice in the third quarter, hitting Njoku for the long score and then connecting with Coley to make it 33-14 not long after the record-breaking completion. Now the question becomes if this was Kaayas home finale.Going pro will be a serious option, and with good reason. This wwas the 11th 300-yard game of Kaayas college career, the fourth four-TD game hes had as a Hurricane and hes now the only quarterback in Miami history with three seasons of at least 3,000 yards.dddddddddddd.It might have crossed my mind a little bit, that it could be, Kaaya said, when asked if he considered the possibility that this was his last home game as a Hurricane. But Ive still got some things to look at, to factor in, to talk over and hash out with Coach Richt, my parents and some mentors of mine.THE TAKEAWAYDuke: Coach David Cutcliffe was emotional after the game, talking about his senior class. Im looking at our seniors and the body of work that theyve done. The pain in their eyes, knowing that its come to an end, you cant get past that, Cutcliffe said. Jones completed his first 10 passes, getting 119 yards and two touchdowns out of them. But the Blue Devils, after getting 14 points out their first two possessions, then sputtered to a halt. ... T.J.
