CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginias players are coming off a last-second loss that stretched their road losing streak to 17, but the Cavaliers feel they are on the cusp of ending the skid.Their next chance comes Saturday when they host Central Michigan (3-0).We get more hungry each game because we know were almost there, defensive end Andrew Brown, coming off his best college game with 3 1/2 tackles for loss and a sack, said this week. Weve just got to make it happen.Virginia lost 13-10 at Connecticut last Saturday when backup placekicker Alex Furbank, playing in the first football game of his career, missed a 20-yard field goal that would have forced overtime as time expired.New Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall isnt letting players hang their heads. Brown said he does things at team meetings to keep the attitude upbeat, like showing video of funny plays that happened. But center and co-captain Jackson Matteo said the coach is not all happy talk.Coach Mendenhall always says its up to us, he said. When everyone chooses to collectively put everything towards every single practice, deliberate practice, those practices will lead to the game and when we get to the game it will be second nature to us. Well just go out there. Well just play. Its going to be so special. The Chippewas, of the Mid-American Conference, impressed their coach John Bonamego last week by following up their last-second victory at Oklahoma State with another focused effort in a 44-21 win against UNLV.Its very important to be able to handle success, especially as you start to string these together, Bonamego said. It becomes very easy to maybe kind of be intoxicated you success or maybe let up a little bit.Quarterback Cooper Rush threw for 352 yards and six touchdowns on just 20 completions in the rout.Bonamego, though, has also been impressed by what hes seen from Virginia.A wounded animal is always the most dangerous, the coach, in his second season at his alma mater, said. Im sure theyll pull out all stops and well be prepared for anything and everything.---Some other things to watch when Central Michigan visits Virginia:OPPOSITES ATTRACT: The Chippewas will arrive averaging 41 points and allowing just 17 per game, both in the top 30 nationally. Virginia allows 31.3 points and scores 18.7 per game.DEFENSIVE TEST: Virginia struggled in its first two games adapting to Mendenhalls 3-4 defensive alignment before rallying against the Huskies. A high-powered offense with a veteran quarterback in Rush will provide a test, but Mendenhall said after scouting the Chippewas, the focus went completely back, and its on us. Rush has 78 career touchdown passes and 12 300-plus yard passing games in his career.KICKING: Furbank, a former soccer player at Division III Randolph-Macon, was forced into duty with regular kicker Dylan Sims nursing a groin injury. Sims still handled kickoffs, and Furbank made a 23-yard field goal and an extra point, but missed the crucial kick at the end when Virginia had to rush to even get the kick off. Mendenhall said when Sims is healthy again, the two will continue competing against each other on a weekly basis.PENALTIES: Mendenhall wasnt exactly thrilled when his team was not called for a single penalty it its opener, viewing the number as representing and absence of aggression. He hasnt been exactly happy in the two games since, either: The Cavaliers have been called for 10 penalties in each for a total of 193 yards.THIRTY-ONE YEARS: Central Michigan, 0-13 against ACC programs, is seekings its first 4-0 start since the 1985 season when Bonamego was a walk-on wide receiver and backup quarterback. That team went on to finish 7-3.---Online: The APs college football page: http://collegefootbal.ap.org---Follow Hank on Twitter: www.twitter.com/hankkurzjrCustom Minnesota Twins Jerseys .com) - Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer were easy first-round winners Tuesday at the Australian Open. RIO DE JANEIRO - Landlocked and completely encircled by the nation of South Africa, Lesotho is a small former British colony that gained its independence 50 years ago.?It is a poor nation, with an average annual income of less than $1,400, according to World Vision.Olympic mountain biker Phetetso Monese knows these financial conditions all too well. While working in a merchandise shop 10-11 hours day, six days a week -- with an occasional seventh day as well -- Monese said he earned $100 a month. That means he was making roughly 40 cents an hour. He also needed to provide for his wife and two children. The family has been living in an apartment that is owned by relatives. It is so small it basically has a kitchen and one bedroom. And the kitchen is where he sometimes trains by spinning on his bike.I was only resting some time on Sundays. Sometimes I would have to go to competitions and my boss would say, No, you cant have any chance to go there -- you have to work, Monese said of his days as a merchandiser. So it was really a big challenge for me, because I really like my sport and also need the job to provide for the family.Monese, 32, got into cycling roughly a decade ago, when he was riding a cheap, three-speed bike. He faced obstacles considerably more challenging than even the toughest mountain bike course, but he has risen in the sport to where he will become the first athlete from Lesotho to compete in cycling at the Olympics. He also is the highest-ranked black African in the UCI world rankings. One of just eight Olympians from his country, Monese will be riding a $7,000 bike that he received thanks to support from The Sufferfest, a company that produces videos for high intensity cycling workouts. He joined ACE-The Sufferfest bike team two years ago, gaining just enough salary, financial allowances and prize money -- sometimes as low as $20 for winning a race in Lesotho -- that Monese was able to leave his job, train longer and take care of his family more easily.Ive been given more from Sufferfest than what I was making while working, he said. Im really so happy because it make a lot of difference now. We can do things that we were not able to do in the family before. It has really helped a lot.Mark West, manager of the ACE-The Sufferfest team, met up with Monese a while back and has been assisting him since 2012.dddddddddddd He is a very humble and respectful person, West said. But when racing, he has a determination to win. He does not get easily intimidated, even though most of his competitors are much taller than him.West saw this determination in Monese early on, watching him ride his old mountain bike in road races against competitors on much better bikes. Mountain bikes cant keep up with road bikes for long, but Monese would stay with them for the first few kilometers before finally falling back.Cycling can be an expensive sport and is not very popular in Lesotho. Monese started riding because he loves it -- and what it has done for him. Most of the time I try to work as hard as I can to have a better life through sports because that is the only thing I see to help me get a better future, he said. Its really hard work to overcome such things.Despite the challenges he faced, Monese said his wife, Mareabetsoe, was always supportive of his riding: One of the things I can say is the reason I am succeeding in my sport is the support I get from my family.Monese doesnt ride until the final day of the Olympics, when the vast majority of athletes will be done. That gives him time to train and learn the course and make himself even better -- and potentially inspire others back home in Lesotho and elsewhere.Im definitely sure I want to be inspiration for others in my country, he said. Maybe they want to be like me when they are growing up and riding. You want to be like that guy. Maybe in some other countries.Everything is possible, Monese said, no matter your background. Some people will say that I have no time for doing this and this and this. But you can make time for what you want if you really know what I want, he said. Because I was working and cycling at the same time. It wasnt easy. There is always time if you really know what you want, so you can do your best.He continued: The thing is, if you really know what you want, that makes your way so easy to go through. If you have the target and want to achieve that, you have to focus and make time for that. There are a lot of challenges you can overcome, but try to overcome them even though its not easy. ' ' '
