KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Alex Gordon had two firsts Sunday: six RBIs and a curtain call. Gordon went 4 for 4 with a pair of three-run homers and a career-high six RBIs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-6. Gordon drove a 1-1 pitch from Ubaldo Jimenez (2-5) out to right with two outs in the fifth with Nori Aoki and Billy Butler aboard. Gordon, who led the Royals with 20 home runs last year, had gone 134 at-bats without a home run. Gordon homered in his next at-bat, a three-run shot off left-hander Troy Patton in the seventh after Eric Hosmer walked and Butler doubled for his third hit. The Kauffman Stadium crowd then gave Gordon a lengthy standing ovation, calling him out of the dugout. Gordon said he had "never" had a curtain call. "I didnt know what to do," Gordon said. "They told me just to go wave my helmet. They just started yelling at me. I was downstairs enjoying the moment. They told me to come up and give the crowd a wave. It was my first. Hopefully, its not the last. It was pretty cool. Its something I want forget. "Its fun when we play like this and the crowd starts doing what they do. It makes it really exciting." It was Gordons third career multi-homer game. His six RBIs matched a Royals season high. His four hits matched a career high, the 10th time he has accomplished that. "Even though I was making good pitches, they found a way to hit the ball hard. I felt really good and I made a lot of good pitches," Jimenez said. "They had a good approach. I threw a lot of sinkers down and they found the hole every time. They had a really good game. Theres nothing I can do but move on." Gordons second homer turned out to be necessary. Adam Jones hit a three-run homer off Royals reliever Aaron Crow in the ninth. It was the first runs Crow allowed in 20 relief appearances and 17 innings. Greg Holland got the final two outs for his 12th save in 13 appearances. James Shields (6-3) picked up his fifth win in six starts, holding the Orioles to three runs and nine hits over seven innings. Shields won back-to-back starts at Kauffman Stadium for the first time. Shields settled down after a three-run third when he gave up five hits, including four straight to open the inning. "The difference (was) I was getting my ground balls and they found holes," Shields said of the third inning. "I was making my pitches, trying to get a double play that inning and they were just finding some good holes." Jimenez, who was 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in his first three May starts, was pulled after five innings. He permitted five runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. "The pitch to Gordon was uncharacteristic," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He had, really, just the one (bad) pitch to Gordon. He tried to go down and away, and it came back in and came into a sweet spot. He hadnt walked anybody to that point, either. Except for one pitch I thought he was good. After the first inning he was pretty crisp." Nick Markakis singled home J.J. Hardy, who had three hits, and David Lough in the Orioles third. Manny Machado, who had three hits, had a sacrifice fly in the third to score Jonathan Schoop for the other run off Shields. Butler singled home Aoki with two outs in the first for the first Kansas City run. Lorenzo Cains single in the fourth scored Gordon with the other Royals run. Marcus Smart and Markel Brown scored 25 points apiece and the Cowboys (5-0) cruised past South Florida 93-67 in another lopsided early-season matchup on Monday night. It was Oklahoma States first game since a 21-point rout of then-11th-ranked Memphis, which had been expected be the Cowboys first real test. "I thought we got just an incredible team effort by everybody. Everybody contributed, but I thought Markel Brown had one of the best games Ive seen from an individual in a long time. You look at the stat line ... thats an incredible performance," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said. In addition to going 5 of 6 from behind the 3-point and making 9 of 15 shots overall, the 6-foot-3 Brown had eight rebounds, seven assists, two steals, three blocks and no turnovers. "Weve been playing great basketball so far. ... Were just trying to stay humble, trying to stay out of the media looking at all different sorts of things about how great this team can be," Brown said. "Obviously, we know how great we can be. Whether we put it together is on us." There were eight lead changes in the opening minutes, however Smart put a big exclamation mark on a 23-point opening-half with a buzzer-beating shot from beyond half-court to put Oklahoma State up by 16 at halftime. That was as close as South Florida (4-1) would get the rest of the way. USF Coach Stan Heath said Oklahoma State showed once again that it is far from a one-man show. "The thing that I was concerned about was focusing a lot of attention on Marcus Smart, knowing that several other guys are very, very good basketball players," Heath said. "Markel Brown, I think, is one of the more underrated players around the country. He really shot the lights out tonight. ... and we couldnt rattle him, couldnt force him into turnovers," Heath added. "They look like a team that was in mid- to late-season form.&" John Egbunu led USF with 15 points and eight rebounds.dddddddddddd Victor Rudd had 14 points and Chris Perry finished with 10. "Theyre going to win a lot of games, and were happy with this victory because I think we beat a good team tonight," Ford said. Smart only took three shots in the second half and didnt score until making a pair of free throws with 3:22 remaining in the game. By that time the lead was up to 89-63, Smart left the game and the only remaining question is whether Oklahoma State would score over 100 for the third time in five games. The Cowboys began the night averaging 102 points after beating Mississippi Valley State, Utah Valley, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Memphis by an average of 41 points per game. Smart scored a career-high 39 points during last weeks 101-80 victory over Memphis, helping his team climb two spots in the latest rankings. Oklahoma State will spend the rest of the week in Florida, where it will play three more games in the Old Spice Classic at Disney World, beginning with a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Purdue. LeBryan Nash scored 15 points and Brian Williams had 13 for Oklahoma State. Smart finished 8 of 16 from the field and had four assists, four steals and three rebounds. "I was anxious to see how we would respond," Ford said. "When theyre locked in, when theyre really locked in, were a pretty good basketball team." The 6-foot-4 Smart, who decided to remain in school rather than enter the NBA draft after the Cowboys early exit from the NCAA tournament last season, made 8 of 13 shots in the opening half. The only 3-pointer he made came on a heave from beyond midcourt to finish a 14-5 spurt that opened a 51-35 halftime lead. South Florida, which was unbeaten through four games for only the eighth time in the programs 43-year history, fell to 5-39 against ranked opponents in seven seasons under coach Stan Heath. The Bulls have only been 5-0 or better twice, the last time 12 years ago.
