COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 20 Texas A&Ms first-year offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone likened his work with quarterback Trevor Knight in their debuts with the Aggies to a first date. There were some things that went well in Texas A&Ms 31-24 overtime win against UCLA. But there are also plenty of ways the pair will improve as they get to know each other better.Dont think he was satisfied or we were satisfied, Mazzone said. We are still a work in progress. For him and me. Thats first time he has to learn how I am as play-caller and I have to learn his play ... try to figure each other out and play to each others strengths. On Saturday, the pair will get another chance to work together when the Aggies, who jumped in the poll this week after being unranked in preseason, host FCS Prairie View in the first meeting between two schools just 50 miles apart. The Panthers opened the season by rallying twice to beat Texas Southern 29-25.Knight threw for 239 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores in his first game at A&M after transferring from Oklahoma as a graduate student. Coach Kevin Sumlin was impressed with the 22-year-olds poise throughout the game and particularly in overtime when he ran for the winning touchdown.Knight is looking to clean up some things this week and do more for the Aggies. We know that we can play a whole lot better, he said. So thats our focus this week. Attack the week and make ourselves better.Though Knight is a veteran who had appeared in 24 games for the Sooners before coming to Texas A&M, he admitted that getting his first game with the Aggies out of the way was a relief. He feels much more comfortable having been in a game with his new teammates and believes the jitters he had in the season opener will be gone on Saturday. He believes the way the team performed to win in overtime will help the Aggies as competition gets tougher.I think we are closer because of last Saturday, Knight said. Knowing that if we stick together were going to be OK.Some things to know about the Prairie View-Texas A&M game:CLOSING GAMES OUTThe Aggies led by 15 points in the fourth quarter on Saturday before allowing UCLA to rally to tie it and send it to overtime. Its a letdown that concerns Sumlin as Texas A&M prepares for the start of SEC play against Auburn next weekend. We have to close out games. Finish games, Sumlin said. Have to get more out of our backup guys in critical games like that. Got to find more guys to keep guys fresher in certain positions. Got to do some things offensively to help ourselves.GARRETT GETS GOINGDefensive end Myles Garrett, who is projected to be a top-five pick in the NFL draft if he leaves school after this season, picked up where he left off last season. He was in UCLA quarterback Josh Rosens face all day and finished with a sack, 1 1/2 tackles for losses and two quarterback hurries. He led the SEC with 12 1/2 sacks last season.NOILS RETURNWide receiver Speedy Noil will return this week after sitting out the opener as the second game of a two-game suspension he received before A&Ms bowl game last season for an unspecified violation of rules. Sumlin said Noil earned a starting spot in camp and is looking forward to his return. It was best fall camp hes had, Sumlin said. For him its consistency in his actions. Has as much talent as anybody ... worked really, really diligently in the offseason to understand his positon.Noil had 44 catches for 559 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman in 2014 and added 645 yards on 27 kick returns that season. He was slowed by injuries and two separate suspensions last season and finished with just 226 yards receiving.RUNNING GAME SHINESTexas A&M finished with 203 yards rushing on Saturday behind a running game led by freshman Trayveon Williams and Oklahoma transfer Keith Ford. Williams ran 15 times for 94 yards and Ford had 14 carries for 65 yards in his first game after sitting out a season following his transfer. Sumlin said James White, who had just two carries in the opener, will also see plenty of action this season, leaving the team with plenty of options at the position. Wholesale NFL Jerseys Gear . Discount Nike NFL jerseys . -- Cam Newton pranced into the end zone, placed his hands over his chest and did his familiar Superman pose. LOUISVILLE, Ken. -- Its out of the frying pan and into the fire for No. 14 Louisville.Just days after taking on a challenging slate in one of the toughest in-season tournaments in the country at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, the Cardinals (5-1) return to the KFC Yum! Center Wednesday night for a showdown vs. No. 15 Purdue during the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge.Louisville coach Rick Pitino knows the Boilermakers (5-1) will be a tall test for his team.We are going to play two teams from the Big Ten and I think Purdue is one of the favorites to win it, Pitino said. They have a veteran team and they have tremendous size. ... They also shoot it really well from the one, two and three spots. They have a good inside attack and a good outside attack, and they have always been a good man-to-man defensive team.Purdues front line includes 7-foot-2, 290-pound center Isaac Haas, 6-9 Caleb Swanigan and 6-8 Vincent Edwards. Pitino said Purdues strength is more than just height. We have a couple of 7-footers as well, but Anas (Mahmoud) is 7-foot, 220. Haas is 7-foot-2, 290, Pitino explained. Thats a big difference. And Swanigan, hes 6-9 and 260 and uses his size well. We are likely going to have to play (7-1, 245-pound reserve) Matz (Stockman) more to counter their size.Purdue started the season with a 109-65 win over McNeese State before taking on Top 5 Villanova in a 79-76 loss that went down to the final possession. The Boilermakers have rebounded with wins over Georgia State, Utah State, Auburn and NJIT.Purdue coach Matt Painter said hes looking forward to the challenge at Louisville.Their overall length and athleticism is what stands out, Painter said. Theres times when you have to swallow your pride when they have two or three people on the basketball. Ive been shocked ... at the times people keep trying to challenge them when they swarm the basketball, and been impressed with their ability to defend and their ability to use their length -- not just at the rim, but contesting shots.Louisville started the season with three straight blowout wins over Evansville, William & Mary and Long Beach State, before heading to thhe Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis.dddddddddddd. After beating Old Dominion 68-62 in overtime to start the tournament, Louisville beat Wichita State 62-52 and had a 22-point lead on No. 9 Baylor before falling 66-63 in the title game. This is the first team I have had in a while where the players dislike losing as much as the coaches do, Pitino said. They were very disappointed in losing to Baylor...but they got back to work this week.Swarming defenses like Louisvilles have been an issue for Purdue in the past. Villanova certainly used pressure defense to frustrate the Boilermakers, and Purdue fell victim to the University of Arkansas -- Little Rock in the NCAA Tournament last season due, in large part, to not handling UALRs full-court pressure. To combat that issue, Painter has been getting grad assistants involved wearing white shirts in practice. Those extra defenders are immune from fouls and are tasked with making life difficult for ball-handlers.We cant have the (turnover) numbers we have and expect to beat good people -- we just cant, Painter said. I like our matchup against anyone if we give ourselves a chance. If were constantly in transition because we try to take on two or three guys and are turning it over, I dont like that matchup. I dont like our matchup against anybody in transition. The Boilermakers are learning. If you show youre going to struggle with it and be careless with the ball, youre going to get pressed, point guard P.J. Thompson said. But the first few times they press you, if you really show them youre good and its not going to bother us and you get the ball in the frontcourt, it lays off a little bit.Painter said scheduling games against teams like Louisville or Villanova isnt easy, but they will provide long-term benefits for his team. Its hard to schedule games of this nature, Painter said. Everyones going to play in the Big 10-ACC Challenge, the Crossroads Classic, things of that nature. Not everyone wants to play on the road, even if you do a home and home. ' ' '
