TORONTO -- Kelly Johnson and Desmond Jennings homered and Tampa Bay starter Alex Cobb pitched 6 1-3 strong innings as the Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre. Starter Ramon Ortiz (1-2) took the loss for Toronto, which had its four-game home winning streak come to an end. The rubber game in the three-game series will go Wednesday afternoon. Cobb (5-2) allowed three hits and one earned run to trim his earned-run average to 2.73. Fernando Rodney gave up a run in the ninth inning before picking up his ninth save. Colby Rasmus hit a solo homer for the Blue Jays, who fell deeper into the American League East basement at 18-27. Tampa Bay (24-21) gave Cobb an early lead by scoring a pair of runs in the second inning. Rays slugger Evan Longoria extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a double and moved to third on a James Loney groundout. Longoria scored when Luke Scott hit a slow grounder down the third-base line. Johnson followed with a solo blast. He took a 2-1 pitch from Ortiz over the wall in centre field for his eighth homer of the year. Jennings hit Ortizs first pitch of the third inning over the wall in left-centre for his fifth home run of the season. Left-hander Aaron Loup relieved Ortiz with runners on the corners and one out. First baseman Edwin Encarnacion made a nice defensive play by short-hopping a Loney chopper on the run and throwing out Ben Zobrist at home. Scott then drove in Longoria with a single to make it 4-0. Rasmus woke up the quiet crowd of 15,802 with a solo shot -- his seventh homer of the year -- in the fifth inning. The ball bounced off the 300-level scoreboard in right field and fell into the seats in the second deck. Toronto threatened with two outs in the sixth inning when Jose Bautista singled and Encarnacion walked. Adam Lind hit a sharp grounder that former Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar snagged behind second base and threw to first to get Lind by half a step. Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., reached on a throwing error by Longoria with one out in the seventh inning. Jake McGee relieved Cobb and got Rasmus on a flyout and pinch-hitter Mark DeRosa on a strikeout. Toronto cut into Tampas lead in the eighth inning. Munenori Kawasaki singled and moved to second on a Melky Cabrera walk. Bautista hit a single that scored Kawasaki. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out but J.P. Arencibia hit into an inning-ending double play. Rasmus doubled in the ninth inning and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Kawasaki reached base on a walk but was left stranded when Rodney got Cabrera on a strikeout to end the game. Ortiz allowed six hits, four earned runs, one walk and had one strikeout. Loup, Esmil Rogers, Steve Delabar and Brett Cecil handled relief duties for Toronto. Tampa Bay outhit Toronto 10-6 and the game took three hours 15 minutes to play. Notes: The series finale will be a rare late afternoon start. First pitch is scheduled for 4:37 p.m. Eastern Time. PHILADELPHIA -- The St. Louis Cardinals were riding a five-game winning streak entering Saturdays game in Philadelphia. They were fresh off of a come-from-behind, ninth-inning comeback victory against the Phillies on Friday. It was another game in which they hit at least two home runs in a game, their ninth consecutive game of such stature. They became the first National League team and just the fifth team in MLB history to hit two or more home runs in nine straight games.Saturday night, that came to a close. Only Jeremy Hazelbaker went deep in a 4-2 loss for the Cardinals. Its hard to hit one a game for a consistent amount of time, St. Louis manager Matheny said. I thought today might be a day, especially when Hazelbaker hit one early. You could it the way guys were taking their at-bats there was an opportunity to maybe do it again.Hazelbakers home run gave St. Louis nine players with double-digit home runs on the year -- the most in baseball and tied for the most in a season in franchise history (2000).The Cardinals look to keep slugging the ball in Sundays rubber match at Citizens Bank Park against young righty Vince Velasquez (8-5, 4.14 ERA).Velasquez, 24, has given up three home runs in each of his last two starts. Velasquez was blitzed for five runs -- all in the fifth and sixth innings -- on seven hits in 5 2/3 iinnings while striking out 10 against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.dddddddddddd.Velasquez is likely nearing an innings limit, but the Phillies said they dont have an exact number or date in mind just yet. Hes thrown 113 innings in 2016.In Vinces case, we do, we are targeting a specific number of starts, innings, pitches, trying to manage his workload, Philadelphia general manger Matt Klentak said Wednesday. He goes out (Tuesday) night, and I know with the three home runs the line wasnt as impressive as it mightve looked at times, but (damn) his stuff was good last night. He was lights out.St. Louis counters with right-hander Mike Leake (8-9, 4.78 ERA).The Cardinals, who have a 1 1/2-game lead for the second wild card spot in the National League, need Leake to start improving if they want to continue to make a playoff push.Leake, signed to a five-year, $80 million deal last offseason, has allowed at least three runs in five consecutive starts. He hasnt won in three August starts and his 1.28 WHIP is his worst since 2012. Leakes ERA hasnt been below 4.00 since May 31.He previously faced the Phillies on May 4 in St. Louis, taking a no-decision while giving up four runs in five innings. ' ' '
