Alastair Cook was left ruing missed chances in the field as England succumbed to an innings defeat in Mumbai. While Cook admitted England had erred in selection - picking four seamers on a pitch where Indias spinners claimed 19 wickets - he felt the defining moments of the game came when England failed to take chances to dismiss all three of Indias centurions in the relatively early stages of their innings.Jonny Bairstow missed a stumping opportunity off M Vijay when he had 45, Virat Kohli was put down by Adil Rashid - a difficult caught and bowled chance - on 68, and Joe Root put down Jayant Yadav at slip when he had eight. Vijay went on to score 136, Kohli made 235 and Yadav 104.The frustration for Cook is that these things keep happening. The series against Pakistan was littered with missed opportunities - and Rashid also put down a tough chance off Kohli in Visakhapatnam when he had scored 56. He went on to make 167.I keep going back to the chances we missed, Cook told Star Sports. Thats why we lost this game.Yes, we would have liked another spinner. But with the side we had, we had opportunities to bowl India out for 400 and we just didnt take them.Obviously Virat played an extraordinary innings, but we had a chance to get rid of him on 60-odd. Yadav got a 100 and we had a couple of chances to get rid of him. And those are the things the game is changing on. This team, at the moment, were not taking those chances. Its those opportunities that have cost us.Cook also admitted England didnt need that extra seamer in Mumbai. Going into the match with six bowlers - two spinners and four quicks - Cook was obliged to ask Rashid and Moeen Ali to deliver more than 50 overs, while none of the seamers bowled more than 20.That was a mistake, he said. Its kind of the problem when you dont have any games between Test Matches. We really wanted to see what four seamers looked like, because they are the bowlers so far on this tour who have given us the most control and our two best spinners have been Mo and Rash.Maybe if wed bowled first wed have more control with the four seamers. But clearly when you bat first, you didnt need that extra seamer.Whether it would have changed the game... we were in this game with the balance of that side. We had an opportunity when they were 307 for 6 to restrict Indias lead. Historically, 180 is a good score here in the third innings and its very hard to score much in the fourth innings. So we would have been in the game. But would have, could have isnt really good enough and thats the bottom line: we havent been good enough to get over the line.Cook had praise for Kohli, though: Hes in incredible form. Hes having one of those series you dream of as a player and a captain. You lead from the front and you score a hell of a lot of runs and thats a huge amount of credit to him. Hes clearly one of the great batsmen of our generation. And certainly in these conditions, hes very hard to bowl at when hes in this form. Nick Thurman Jersey . SAO PAULO -- Its a 60-minute flight from the Olympic host city, but worlds apart in spirit and style. If Rio de Janeiro is more like a chilled-out, sun-worshipping Los Angeles, Sao Paulo is all New York City -- the intense financial nerve center of Brazil.Long rivals, the nations two most-populous places once competed for the chance at an Olympic bid, and even though Sao Paulo had to sit back and watch the 2016 games unfold from afar, Paulistanos have had some kind, if not qualified, words for the Cariocas.Given the laid-back reputation as a city where people prefer to have fun than work, I did not think Rio could do it, Andre Tanabe, a civil engineering student at the University of Sao Paulo, said while watching Argentina defeat Brazil in Olympic basketball. Rio surprised me and, I think, many others in Sao Paulo.Added Beatriz de Almeida, an architect here: I never thought Cariocas would pull it off. But they did, and they did it beautifully.During much of the 71 years that Rio was the countrys capital, from 1889 to 1960, Sao Paulo was seen as an irrelevant city with little to offer, said Monica de Carvalho, professor of sociology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo. But by 1960, when the capital was transferred to Brasilia, Sao Paulo had grown into the financial and industrial capital of Brazil. Its a hub for factories that make everything from shoes to cars.Thats when the rivalry began, Carvalho said, adding it has never been a hostile one but rather friendly one-upmanship, with residents of each city claiming superiority over the other.Over the years that rivalry has been reduced to almost nothing, and tooday the two cities complement each other, she said.ddddddddddddWhen the Brazilian Olympic Committee was shaping its unsuccessful bid for the 2012 Summer Games, it chose Rio over Sao Paulo as the place to pitch. Brazils UOL news portal warned the decision could aggravate the historical climate of rivalry between the two cities. That didnt happen, Carvalho said, because Rios Cariocas did not claim the games as their own, but rather as something that belongs to the entire country ... as something that all Brazilians should be proud of.The same has been true throughout the 2016 Summer Games, with some soccer matches even being held in Sao Paulo, Brazils most populous city with 11.3 million people. Rio is home to about 9.6 million.Sipping a cup of coffee in a posh bakery in Sao Paulos Jardims district, Rafael Pereira put down his ham and cheese croissant when asked about the competition between Rio and Sao Paulo. Rivalry? he said. What rivalry?I grew up hearing how Sao Paulo is better than Rio, because we are the so-called locomotive that drives the economy and creates jobs, while Rio is the city of Carnival, music and beaches where people prefer to play rather than work, he said.Pereira, a lawyer, enjoy he prefers the word contrast to rivalry. Sao Paulo has better restaurants, nightclubs and theaters, while Rio is more scenic and the Cariocas far more relaxed. One city is not better or worse than the other, Pereira said. They are different.
